Solidarity in Spain: Mobilization to keep Pedro Sánchez in power

Thousands of supporters of the Spanish Socialist Party assembled in Madrid, near the party headquarters, in support of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. Confronted with a possible resignation, demonstrators voiced solidarity with Sánchez, chanting slogans for him to continue leading the government.

This mobilization arises in a context where the Prime Minister is considering tp step down from office following heightened political tensions and accusations targeting his family.

Accusations that shake up politics
Pedro Sánchez, the head of government since 2018, shocked Spain by revealing last Wednesday that he was considering resigning. This statement follows the opening of an inquiry against his wife, Begoña Gómez, following a complaint from the “Manos Limpias” association, known for its ties with the extreme right. Sánchez said he would announce his final decision the following Monday, sparking a wave of reactions across the country.

A call to resist
Maria Jesus Montero, vice president of the government and budget minister, expressed genuine support for Sánchez during the rally: “Mr. President, stay. Pedro, stay, we are together… We must move forward, and continue to push this country forward, Spain cannot go backwards. »

Political reactions and perspectives
Analysts are split on the outcome of this crisis. Some suggest that Sánchez could offer a vote of confidence in Parliament to prove that his government still enjoys a majority, thereby stabilizing his position. Others predict he could resign.

Opposition criticism
Alberto Nuñez Feijoo, leader of the Popular Party, the main opposition group, criticized Sánchez, calling him theatrical and disconnected from the reality that Spaniards experience. Cecilia Gamarra, general secretary of the Popular Party, added that Sánchez was aiming to position himself as a victim to seek support that he does not currently have.
