Tunisia and Algeria commemorate 66th anniversary of Sakiet Sidi Youssef massacre

Tunisia and Algeria are marking the 66th anniversary of the tragic Sakiet Sidi Youssef massacre, committed by French colonial aviation on February 8, 1958. This sombre anniversary acts as a poignant reminder of the deep bonds of brotherhood and solidarity that exist between the Algerian and Tunisian peoples.

The Sakiet Sidi Youssef bombing was a French military operation during the Algerian War, implicating 25 aircraft targeting the Tunisian village of Sakiet Sidi Youssef. The attack resulted in the deaths of over 70 people, including about ten students from a primary school, and left 148 others injured among the village population.

At a conference held in Algiers on Wednesday, Said Mokadem, the Secretary General of the Consultative Council of the Arab Maghreb Union, underscored the grave nature of the attack. According to APS, Mokadem drew similarities between the current acts of genocide against humanity occurring in Gaza and the atrocities committed during Algeria’s 132 years of colonization. He characterized the Sakiet Sidi Youssef massacre as one of the premeditated massacres by French colonization against innocent civilians, stressing the historical context of violence and oppression that has shaped the region’s history.
