Tunisia-Coronavirus :Irregular migrants begin strike against living conditions in centre

Migrants in an irregular situation residing in the Ouardia reception and orientation centre, on Monday, staged a strike protesting living conditions in the centre.

These migrants consider that the living conditions at the centre do not protect them from the spread of the COVID-19, said migration officer at the Tunisian forum for economic and social rights (FTDES) Romdhane Ben Amor.

He explained that the 56 migrants residing at the centre are of sub-Saharan nationality. They protest against the lack of means of protection and receiving new migrants without any preventive measures.

They also protest the authorities’ way of dealing with them and the forced repatriation operations they face.

Ben Amor recalled that international non-governmental organisations, such as the World Health Organisation, have called for their release and have warned of the repercussions of their quarantine in such conditions.

This protest movement will continue until the migrants residing in the centre are released, said one of the protesters.
