The regional director of religious affairs in Kairouan confirmed that he had, in fact, declined to grant permission to some representatives of civil society to hang a giant flag of Palestine on the minaret of the great mosque, adding that it is, by law, forbidden to hang any flag on minarets, including the Tunisian flag.
He recommended that activists hang their flag on the city wall or near the Aghlabid pools.
