Tunisia-Kais Saied “After independence, Tunisia became a one-party state”

In a speech addressed to the nation on the occasion of the 66th anniversary of Independence, the President of the Republic, Kais Saied clarified that it is vital to remember that the resistance to the occupation was launched before the signing of the Treaty of Bardo and the Treaty of La Marsa, asserting that negotiations for full independence were not an easy thing.

“After acquiring independence, the process of constructing the country was launched, the Personal Status Code was promulgated and the State ventured on the reform of education and the guarantee of health for all citizens… From then on, the features of the new Tunisian society were slowly defined,” he explained. “But Tunisia gradually turned into a one-party state, activists and opponents were incarcerated for long years,” he added. “It was no secret at the time that corruption and theft of wealth from the Tunisian people was widespread, and this is recorded in reports from a number of international financial institutions,” he said. –
