Tunisia-Moncef Marzouki against the death penalty

In a post published on his official page on September 29, 2020, former President of the Republic Moncef Marzouki said he was against capital punishment, calling for its final abolition.

He said Qur’anic exegesis would lead to condoning slavery, violence against women and social injustices, believing that in countries where this sanction is applied, it is often used for racist and discriminatory purposes.

The former head of state hoped Tunisia would follow Turkey’s lead to become the first Arab state to remove the death penalty from its sanctions registry.
