Tunisia-Municipality of Mahdia: A corruption scandal implicating officials and a real estate company

Al Chourouk journal, in its Wednesday edition, reported the embroilment of a real estate company and officials at Mahdia municipality in a corruption case.

According to the newspaper, the officials gave the owner of the real estate company a building permit to construct a residential and commercial tourism project near a well-known midtown hotel in apparent breach of the law. it turned out that the owner had perpetrated overruns that stopped other projects in the area from being conducted.

The officials were implicated in forging administrative documents and corruption under  Articles 82, 83, 84, 87, 91 and 96 of the Criminal Code.

The newspaper also announced that even the building permit ceded to the company was not done according to current standards. Among the infringements: –

  • The first part of the division does not match the specifications. 
  • The second part of the division has not yet been approved.
  • The building is very close to the property of the damaged party and its height does not adhere to the prescribed standards.
  • Failure to comply with the town plan and construction rules specified in the specifications.
  • The building permit and the engineering models are not equal in terms of filing date and authorization.
  • The presence of a ground floor not stated in the building permit.

The construction of a tourist unit whose components are mixed with the commercial arcade and the construction of 5 floors on the underground side along the central road.

Al Chourouk announced the opening of an inquiry into this matter in accordance with the requirements of the National Authority for the Fight against Corruption (INLUCC). The latter had indicated that the owner of this project is similarly involved in other corruption cases.
