Tunisia-Over 50% of migrants lost their jobs due to coronavirus

Approximately 53% of migrants have lost their jobs during the lockdown period imposed in Tunisia to halt the spread fo COVID-19.

According to the newest figures issued by the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) Tunis Office, the percentage of active migrants sank to 11% in contrast to 64% before the lockdown.

The IOM said that it is attempting in co-ordination with the Tunisian authorities and municipalities to secure social and economic aid to migrants living in Tunisia, pointing out that 39% of migrant workers with children have profited from aids (54% of them are women and 46% men).

The average age of the recipients is assessed at 30, the same source added.

According to the IOM, since the beginning of the health crisis, 7,002 migrants throughout the country have benefited from assistance (food, meal vouchers, cleaning products and others).
