He voiced commitment to remedy shortcomings hindering the functioning of courts for many decades, says a Presidency statement. “Judges are called to apply the law and that a judge can in no way act as legislator,” Saied was quoted as stressing, as he met Justice Minister Leila Jaffel at Carthage Palace. Sovereignty belongs to the people and powers draw their essence from the popular will, he said, adding that the spirit of the law requires each party to carry out its mission within the framework of the law. Saied insisted that the temporary Supreme Judicial Council is made up solely of judges, stressing the imperative to keep this structure away from any form of interference. Cleaning up the country starts necessarily with cleaning up the judiciary, he indicated, saying everyone must be equal before the law. The Public Prosecutor’s Office must act automatically as soon as it sees or was informed of a violation, the President emphasised.
