Tunisia-Riahi: “On 1st day of Ramadan… prices of red meat unacceptable, with rows continuing for bread.” [Video]

Speaking to Tunisie Numérique, head of the Tunisian Organization for Consumer Guidance Lotfi Riahi, head of the Tunisian Organization for Consumer Guidance, condemned the persistent rise in the prices of red meat, at the retail level, to attain 40 and 45 dinars per kilogram, while the meat company is promoting it within the scope of 32 dinars.

The speaker attributed the high prices in the market, especially for red meat, to various factors, including the scarcity of rainfall. However, he stressed that this situation necessitates a reevaluation of prices and suggested that the prices fixed by the meat company should serve as a reference point for the red meat market.

As for fish, our interlocutor also confirmed that prices have increased, but the matter is different because Tunisians are not in demand for it as is the case for red meat.

He pointed out that there were likewise complaints from citizens against the backdrop of continuous queues in front of bakeries, calling for the generalization of the bread experience with fibres, considering this measure critical in the month of Ramadan to avoid queues for bread and to direct support to those who deserve it, and not to use the floor material manufactured for refreshments and other products.

He called for revising prices and determining the profit margin, remarking that the Ministry of Commerce registered a decrease between 3 and 23% in the prices of several products, thanks to the recent agreement concluded by the Ministry, according to his estimate.
