Tunisia – Sfax: No solution in sight despite Kaïs Saïed’s promise and the urgency of the situation

The waste crisis in Sfax has not moved an inch, since the President of the Republic, Kaïs Saïed commanded the withdrawal of the security forces from Agareb and vowed the delegation he received, that he would call them back for a definitive solution, three days later. Kaïs Saïed kept his word and on Tuesday summoned a delegation of Agareb activists, and talked with them, in the attendance of the Minister of the Environment, Laila Chikhaoui.
Although it appears that no outline of a solution has been discovered, and the situation is not about to unblock, despite the frequently critical situation in Sfax. The slowness of the Minister of the Environment and her team in managing this crisis, and her hesitation to impose a temporary solution will extend the crisis, and destroy any hope for a solution since the approach taken by the minister is giving the foes time to organize themselves and pull the rug out from under her.
This was, for example, the case of Mahres, whose citizens expected any decision in relationship with the establishment of a landfill near their locality, by organizing themselves into a collective demonstration, and by investing in advance the plot of land that was planned for the project. Still, the situation in Sfax is becoming unreasonable, and the risk of epidemics of infectious diseases lurks. And this situation entails a firm and urgent stand, to force an immediate solution, and to initiate studies for long-term solutions. And it is, surely, not with these trembling hands and this slowness that the minister will be able to help her administration and the President of the Republic to overcome this course which is only getting worse, with social consequences that may weigh heavily.
