The issue of sports infrastructure is currently one of the most critical issues in Tunisia. Renewing or rehabilitating these infrastructures, by international standards, often raises thorny problems.
This is the case with the El Menzah Olympic Stadium. Renovation work on the El Menzah Olympic stadium, which dates from 1967, began on June 10, 2022, for an estimated duration of 900 days for 100 million dinars. Work progress is currently only 20%.
The work launched concerns the development of the spaces in the lower areas of the stands, the installation of new stands and the consolidation of the structure of the stadium, in addition to the building of metal structures and the redesign of the changing rooms, are in progress knowing that the stadium of El-Menzah should be operational in November 2024. Which is impossible given the accumulation of problems concerning this file.
It was still required for the Head of State Kais Saied to travel (on November 16, 2023) to the El Menzah stadium where he carried out an inspection visit to the work in progress to note the numerous problems linked to this file beginning with the contract linking the Ministry of Youth and Sports with a Tunisian company.
The department headed by Kamel Deguiche is in the process of conducting the procedures for terminating the renovation contract for the El Menzah Olympic Stadium concluded with a Tunisian company, the director of constructions and equipment declared on Wednesday, April 3, 2024. at the General Directorate of Common Services, at the MJS, Naoufel Belhadj Rhouma.
He also confirmed to the TAP agency that the project would be assigned to a foreign company, adding that a Chinese company specializing in the construction of sports infrastructure had declared itself willing to continue the work already underway. Nevertheless, it will have to submit an offer and it is the company that wins the call for tenders that will take over the project.
Renovation work on the stadium is predicted to resume within five or six months, with a remaining completion time estimated at around a year. This means that the El Menzah Olympic Stadium will not be operational until fall 2025.
