Tunisia-Tunisia moving towards self-sufficiency in sugar

Under Prime Minister Ahmed Hachani’s supervision, a critical ministerial working session took place at the Government Palace in Kasbah, dedicated to examining the sugar sector and the supply of yeast.

This meeting witnessed the participation of key ministers, including those of Interior, Finance, Social Affairs, Economy and Planning, Industry, Mines and Energy, Trade and Development of Exports, as well as Agriculture, Water Resources and Fishing. Also present, are the president and vice-president of the Tunisian Union of Industry, Commerce and Crafts, respectively Samir Majoul and Mohamed Kooli contributed to this strategic debate.

The session was a chance to examine possible solutions as part of a long-term strategic vision to revitalize the sugar beet sector and local sugar production, to ensure the country’s self-sufficiency in this area. This approach is part of the State’s strategic choice to boost its economic and food independence in the face of fluctuations in the global market, which is experiencing profound transformations in the sugar sector.

It was also stressed that sugar beet is a valuable resource not only for the production of sugar but furthermore for the extraction of by-products such as syrup, the main ingredient in the manufacture of baker’s yeast and industrial alcohol, as well as beet pulp, a staple for improving the milk production of cows and rehabilitating agricultural land.
