Tunisia-UN condemns violence suffered by Abir Moussi

The United Nations country team in Tunisia published a statement on Monday, July 5, 2021, denouncing the violence sustained by a Member of Parliament from another MPs during a plenary session of the House of People’s Representatives on June 30.

In its statement, the United Nations country team records with concern that “this incident is not an isolated case but succeeds other recent cases of violence and misogyny against parliamentarian women and more broadly women serving in political circles in Tunisia ” The United Nations emphasises that any act of violence against female politicians – whether physical or verbal – not only forms a breach of human rights but additionally represents a grave threat to democracy and the participation of women in politics and public life. 

The United Nations country team in Tunisia urges the Tunisian authorities to take proper action against the perpetrators of these acts and calls on members of parliament as elected representatives of citizens to be conducted in their behaviour by the highest moral standards.
