Tunisia-(Video) Aghlabid Basins painted with White gypsum, Regional Heritage inspector explains

As part of the preparations for the commemoration of the Mouled in a few days in Kairouan, the monuments were cleaned and maintained.

Among these monuments is Aghlabid Basins “Faskiya” which were emptied of their water and repainted with White gypsum. Something that triggered an extensive media campaign to condemn this last act.

To explain this, the regional heritage inspector told Tunisie Numérique’s correspondent that originally, the monuments of Tunisia were covered with coatings and painted with gypsum. Among other things, the city of Kairouan was named by the travellers as the “White City”.

He added that the fashion to clear the coating and the painting that protected the monuments dates back to the colonization period when the French applied European methods to Tunisian monuments.
