Tunisia – Why did the presidency of the Republic hide the essence of Saïed-Harris interview?

The official Facebook page of the Presidency of the Republic published a post declaring that the president of the republic Kaïs Saïed received a phone call from the vice president of the United States Kamala Harris. The post added that Mrs Harris confirmed to Mr Saïed the solidity of relationships between the two nations, and her country’s support for Tunisia, in particular in the management of its economic crisis, in this period of the pandemic. Harris would have assured Kaïs Saïed of her support in the fight against corruption.

And it appears that the Carthage communications department had not expected that the vice president of the United States would also publish a post about this phone interview and what she published there does not match, specifically, with the Tunisian version.

It turns out that the Tunisian presidency omitted most of this telephone interview, specifically that the American official insisted on the finalization and the establishment of constitutional institutions in the nation, in allusion to the constitutional court. She also displayed the interest of the American leadership in the implementation of the economic reforms announced by the Tunisian request to the IMF, stating that these reforms would allow the United States to support the Tunisian file with this fund.

The differences between the Tunisian and American announcements imply that the Tunisian president did not desire some elements of the interview to be known and in particular the necessity for the establishment of the constitutional court. Which could be viewed as a wake-up call to him. Nevertheless, at this level, we could not ignore that the White House was further going to publish about this interview and that as globalization obliges, it was going to be known instantly!
