UN calls for safe passage of civilians in Ukraine

United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Martin Griffiths at an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council called for steps to be taken to spare civilian lives in Ukraine.

He urged Kiev and Moscow to maintain “a system of constant communication” to ensure civilian protection amid the ongoing military conflict between the two countries.

“This includes allowing safe passage for civilians to leave areas of active hostilities on a voluntary basis, in the direction they choose,” said Griffiths, adding that “all civilians, whether they stay or leave, must be respected and protected.”
