UN: Situation in West Bank ‘rapidly deteriorating’

The United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights highlighted on Thursday that the human rights situation in the West Bank has witnessed a “rapid deterioration”.

The agency specifically called on Israel to cease “unlawful killings” and address “settler violence” against the Palestinian population. It pointed out a significant increase in airstrikes, tank incursions, and bulldozer deployments in refugee camps and populated areas throughout the West Bank. The UN body urgently demanded an immediate cessation of military tactics and weapons use, the release of detained Palestinians, and the removal of “discriminatory movement restrictions” in the region.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk emphasized in the statement, “The use of military tactics means and weapons in law enforcement contexts, the use of unnecessary or disproportionate force.”
