United States President Joe Biden and the White House were not notified about Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin’s hospitalization for three days, Politico reported. Austin was admitted to intensive care on January 1 and the Defense Department told National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan on January 4, according to unnamed US officials.
“I understand the media concerns about transparency and I recognize I could have done a better job ensuring the public was appropriately informed. I commit to doing better. But this is important to say: this was my medical procedure, and I take full responsibility for my decisions about disclosure,” Austin said in a statement following criticism from the Pentagon Press Association.
