Who is George Galloway, the new MP for Rochdale?

Born on August 16, 1954, in Dundee, Scotland, George Galloway is a British left-wing politician known for his unwavering opposition to war, colonialism, and Zionism.

As the Member of Parliament for Rochdale, he is most acknowledged for his unwavering support for Palestine.

Galloway’s political involvement started at the age of 13 when he joined the British Labor Party. He later shifted his focus to international causes, notably after meeting a Palestinian student in 1975.

His parliamentary career began in 1987 when he was elected as the MP for Glasgow Hillhead. Throughout his tenure, Galloway often challenged his party’s stance, especially under Tony Blair’s leadership, leading to his expulsion from the Labor Party in 2003.

Afterwards, he founded the Respect party, fulfilling notable successes in constituencies like Bethnal Green and Bow in 2005 and Bradford West in 2012, although he lost the latter seat in 2015.

In 2021, Galloway established the Workers of Britain party and contested the Batley and Spen by-election, securing the third position.

In 2024, he successfully returned to Parliament representing Rochdale, garnering support from the Muslim community and concentrating his campaign on the Gaza situation.

Beyond his political career, Galloway has left his mark on the media and literature as a writer and presenter, solidifying his position as a critical and controversial voice in British and international politics.
