Who is Haydée Tamzali on appears on the official poster for 34th edition of JCC?

The organizers of the JCC 2023 affirmed today that the portrait of Haydée Tamzali which is in the limelight on the official poster of the 34th edition of the Carthage Cinematographic Days (October 28-November 4, 2023), alone sums up, the starts of Tunisian cinema.

Haydée Tamzali, daughter of Tunisian cinema pioneer Samama Chikli, is the first female actress, screenwriter, and editor in Tunisia and the Arab world. Through her image on the official poster, the JCC pays tribute to all Tunisian filmmakers, who have contributed with commitment and passion to creating films in Tunisia and elsewhere. Whether they are directors, screenwriters, actresses, cinematographers, scriptwriters, editors, decorators, sound engineers, or producers, they are outstanding in all cinematographic professions…

This likewise constitutes a tribute to all Tunisian cinema professionals, women and men, who have contributed significantly to the creation of a rich cinematographic memory dating back a century.

Haydée Tamzali wrote the first fictional scenes in Tunisian cinema and was the first actress and star of the very first films in the history of Tunisian cinema: “Zohra” (1922), “Ain El Ghezal” (1924). Sign of the birth of Tunisian cinema, it sits, 100 years after the production of the first Tunisian fiction film, on the official poster of the JCC 2023.
