Tunisia- UTICA: Cafe owners can no longer pay electricity bills

Head of the National Chamber of Coffee Owners, Hamadi Malhemi said that its members are finding it extremely hard to pay electricity bills, due to the drop in their wages and the discontinuance of their activities for 15 months, following measures adopted by the government in the context of the fight against the coronavirus.

He told the TAP agency that the inability of several of its members to pay the bills has prompted them to go into debt with the electricity and gas company.

According to Mr Malhemi, this crisis has led to the closing of several cafes. Some cafe owners sell their equipment and cars to be able to repay their debts.

UTICA addressed the regional director of the Tunisian Electricity and Gas Company of Ariana, in which it calls for a delay for the owners of cafes and restaurants in the region, before cutting off electricity, given the health crisis which has critically affected them.
