Anarchic occupation of sidewalks by cafes and shops in Tunisia: A danger for pedestrians

Tunisia is confronting a severe problem of illegal occupation of sidewalks by cafes and shops, jeopardizing the safety of pedestrians.

In this photo, a definite example is that of a café located in the Carthage Gardens area, which has intentionally invaded the sidewalk, leaving little room for pedestrians to circulate safely.

The impacts of this anarchic practice are multiple and potentially dangerous, especially for children, people with reduced mobility and the blind.

Despite the fact that thousands of people pass this street daily, local and regional authorities appear to be unresponsive, consequently contributing to the decline of the rule of law in the country. Firm intervention by the authorities is necessary to put an end to these illegal occupations of public spaces and restore safety for pedestrians.
