Malta: A retirement home receives a donation of over € 500,000 on behalf of a Tunisian-based trading group

Dar Tal-Providenza, a retirement home stationed in Malta, has inquired for additional documents on a pledge of 500,000 euros given by former Opposition leader Adrian Delia on behalf of a Tunisian-based trading group.

Following a fundraising campaign on Friday that raised more than 2.5 million euros, Dar tal-Providenza announced in a declaration that cash donations surpass 5,000 euros and pledges over 10,000 euros from individuals and companies, stipulating that they will be subject to a verification process.

As part of this process, the organisation stated it had requested additional documentation following the €500,000 pledge by Catco Group Capital Investment.

“Id-Dar tal-Providenza does not only rely on documentation provided but conducts its own verification process before accepting such donations. Acceptance of the donation is subject to the internal verification process”, the statement said.

Tunisia, where the group is based, was only last year withdrawn from the EU’s list of nations that profess a risk to the financial system because of money laundering and terrorist financing jeopardies.

The group portrays itself as a player in the oil, gas and automotive industry in the Middle East, Africa and the Gulf States.

Former opposition leader Adrian Delia who is still a member of the Nationalist Party, also responsible for the group, stated that donations would become recurrent.

Previous to the headline-grabbing 500k donation pledge, Delia provided €22,775 to Dar tal-Providenza raised by his “team”.

The case earned momentum in Malta, as the amount of the commitment to sell is not simply colossal but also recurring to a little-known association. As a result, we are left to believe in money laundering operations since Tunisia was on the European Community’s blacklist due to the perils of money laundering and terrorist financing.

The PN MP has faced accusations, which he dismisses , of receiving cash sums from Fenech in an alleged bid to thwart MEP David Casa’s re-election hopes in 2019.
