Omicron case rise in S. Africa is ‘unprecedented’ – official

The newly-uncovered Omicron variant of the coronavirus has caused an “unprecedented rise” in new infections, South Africa’s National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) official Michelle Groome asserted on Friday.

During a press conference, the head of the organization’s public health surveillance and response team pointed out that an increasing number of older people is getting infected with the new strain, but underlined that more data is needed.
