Russian war against Ukraine: Present situation (Ukrainian Embassy in Tunisia)

MILITARY UPDATE

  • On January 14, a Russian A-50 aircraft was destroyed over the Sea of Azov and an Il-22M11 was damaged. A-50 is a Russian early warning and control aircraft, which Russia uses to control the attacks of its strike aircraft and detects Ukrainian aircraft in the sky. The A-50 is a very complex and specific aircraft. Russia is not able to compensate for its loss. Il-22M11 aircraft is a protected air command post that acted together with the A-50 during Russian air attacks against Ukraine.
  • The destruction and disabling of these aircrafts are a great achievement of the Ukrainian Defense Forces, which will make it easier to counter Russian aggression in the air.

AGREEMENT ON SECURITY COOPERATION

  • On January 12, in Kyiv, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak signed an Agreement on Security Cooperation. Among all partners of Ukraine, the UK was the first to demonstrate leadership in providing security guarantees to Ukraine, in particular, in the context of countering Russian armed aggression.
  • The concluded agreement is a real mechanism for enhancing security on land, in the air, at sea, and in cyberspace, which includes cooperation in the event of a repeated full-scale attack by Russia. The agreement will be valid for 10 years with the possibility of extension. It will guarantee security until the time of Ukraine’s accession to NATO and will be incorporated into the Alliance’s security system.
  • Similar agreements of Ukraine with other G7 states and the Netherlands are also being developed. Recently, Ukraine has also started negotiations with Romania.

WORK ON UKRAINE’S PEACE FORMULA

  • On January 14, Davos hosted the fourth meeting of National Security Advisors on the Ukrainian Peace Formula. The Peace Formula proposed by President of Ukraine is the quintessence of Ukraine’s desire to end the war, as well as a completely realistic plan to overcome the Russian aggressor. The fourth meeting of the group of advisors is a logical continuation of the meeting in Malta last October. The work is underway; this time, it was possible to engage representatives of 81 countries and international organizations in the discussion.
  • Ukraine will not agree to a frozen conflict. This is unacceptable for Ukrainian society and will not contribute to achieving a lasting peace. At the meeting in Davos, the participants worked on a comprehensive plan of further actions to implement the Peace Formula and paid attention to agreeing on the format of the Global Peace Summit.
