Tunisia commemorates today the 62nd anniversary of the bombing of the Tunisian border village of Sakiet Sidi Youssef, on February 8, 1958.
Sakiet Sidi Youssef is a town and commune in the Kef Governorate, Tunisia, near the border with Algeria.
In 1958, it was bombarded by French forces . The attack was part of French repressions in neighbouring Algeria and provoked condemnation around the world.
The bombardment lasted for nearly an hour and turned the village into ruins. The tragedy claimed the lives of 68 martyrs between Tunisians and Algerians, including 12 children, while the number of wounded reached 87.
To commemorate the event , a treaty will be signed between the Tunisian General Labour Union and The Algerian General Labour Union.
