Speaking to Tunisie Numérique,opposition politician Ayachi Hammami shared his views concerning his proposed initiative to navigate the economic and social crisis Tunisia is confronting. Hammami clarified that the initiative comes amidst discussions among those engaged in public affairs, especially concentrating on setting a date for the next presidential elections.
He outlined that the opposition is currently split into two camps: one advocating for a boycott due to the dominant atmosphere of isolation and autocracy, and the other urging participation in the upcoming presidential elections as a means to legally change the situation.
Hammami’s initiative underlines the significance of initiating discussions and adopting a legal struggle before deciding whether to partake or boycott the forthcoming elections. He advocates for a positive engagement with the Tunisian populace and the National Democratic Opposition, showing readiness to enter the electoral race, underpinned by a dedication to national interest and viewing each election as a potential prospect for change.
He offers a critical analysis of the period from the revolution to the present, specifically focusing on the events described as a “coup,” to evaluate the errors that exacerbated the crisis and hold all accountable parties responsible. Concurrently, he seeks to develop an economic and social program to offer Tunisians an alternative to the current governance and a strategy to exit the multifaceted crisis.
Hammami criticized the past failures of the current opposition, which once held power, as well as the inadequacies of the current authority. He emphasized the need to learn from past mistakes and progress positively.
Furthermore, Hammami stressed that an electoral program is already prepared, focusing on assembling a team of specialists in political and economic affairs to formulate an immediate plan to rejuvenate the economy and a medium-term strategy to guarantee economic recovery. This plan is to be presented to the citizens to reignite hope, alongside nominating a candidate for the electoral process.
He concluded by stating that if, by next June, the conditions for conducting free and fair elections are observed, his group will participate in the electoral campaign. Nevertheless, if the current authority persists in its oppressive tactics, such as the mistreatment of opponents and judicial prosecutions, they will opt out of participation, leading to a natural decision to boycott.
