Tunisia – Death penalty, national security, diplomacy, normalization, individual freedoms … Kaïs Saïed speaks out

Independent nominee Kais Saied, whose media appearances are rare appropriately addressed on the day of the televised debate that took place on 9th of September several key issues. Principal topics that were discussed include capital punishment, national security, diplomacynormalization as well as humanitarian assistance to the families of martyrs and the wounded and personal liberties.

Capital punishment:

Saied revealed his support for capital punishment for crimes that require this sentence.

“Yes, I support capital punishment, Regarding the crimes that are punishable by death after a fair trial offering all guarantees for the accused. These cases sometimes come with some instability in a society where no one is above the law, that being said, the continuity of the state requires the state to be strong and to take necessary measures “.

“knowing that in some countries that abolished the death sentence, it is often executed in a lawless way and that is a thing to pay attention to when comparing our situation and theirs.”

Initiatives to care for the country’s martyrs of both the military and security institutions:

In response to the reporter who asked him if he plans to implement new initiatives to thoroughly assist the families of martyrs of security and military institutions. Kais Saied stated that he had previously introduced initiatives regarding the subject matter before even running for the presidency.

“I am an average person and a Citizen in Tunisia,I have made many initiatives regarding presenting a law to preserve the rights of the families of martyrs and the wounded alike, I would also like to take this opportunity to give my condolences to those who fought terrorism with all their might and passed away while protecting this country. In 2013 I proposed the creation of the foundation of a public institution called “Wafa” to assist the families of martyrs and wounded. I have also suggested for governmental institutes to oversee this structure. Thanks to this initiative the martyr will always be viewed as being alive in terms of promotion”

“This suggestion was made long before I was a presidential candidate. Is 40 million dinars an expensive fair to these families that have made the ultimate sacrifice and are part of this country all while living in misery and poverty? And for that,  care for these families is necessary”.

National security:

When the subject of national security was presented, the winner of the first round paid tribute to the efforts of customs units, who work faithfully to protect national security. He affirmed “We mustn’t deny the role of customs, they are often forgotten and accused. Their efforts to maintain national security are no less than the efforts of other parties. regarding national security, it cannot be narrowed down to a concise perspective. Education, agriculture and others are all sovereign sectors, Our choices must arise from our will in order to ensure security”.

“Sovereign ministries are usually known as the ministries of ” Interior, Justice, Defence and Foreign Affairs “, However, other sectors are equally important and vital. The security council can not replace other institutions. Nothing prevents the creation of new concepts that are different from the traditional one. Our security is indivisible, water and dooms are part of national security as they are vital to Tunisians.”

Normalization:

During the debate, Kais Saïed insisted on explaining the concept of normalization. , he said, “Regarding the notion of normalization ” we are talking about high treason the concept only emerged in 1977, the Arab League has immunity from death and progress its “dead but alive”. It was supposed to be called the League of the Nation and not the Arab League”.

“Many initiatives and texts had been developed, including the 1952 Joint Defense Treaty, which had not shown any fruit. everybody knows the situation of the Arab nation in recent years. The issue does not lie in the Arab league but rather the will of people it must rise to the level of decisions.”

“We have many Treaties and conventions but Commission and councils assemble to issue their resolution with no found impact. Why initiate a project from a party that is immune from any progress we need to search for new ways that will live up to the will of people”

The first country that Kais saied  will visit if he is elected :

“Without any hesitation Algeria, We can not change geography, but we can alter history. I believe that among the most important concerns is to find new solutions to unite and open borders with Algeria. We must break with the old approaches of the federal state or the confederation. We must build new relations with Algeria, Morocco, Libya and Mauritania. It’s our geographical space. Let’s build a new history different from the one we lived. This region and its people have suffered enough The Arab Maghreb must be concretized on the ground. We must devise new ways and new forms to achieve this “.

Diplomacy:

For the independent candidate, diplomacy must be integral and non-divisible, emphasising the need to revise certain conventions.

“The fundamental rule in diplomacy is that diplomacy is a whole entity it cannot be broken. We talk about sport and funeral diplomacies. Diplomacy must be treated with a Comprehensive perception as far as foreign relations you can’t be strong unless you have a strong foundation from the inside supported by the will of people which in return provide the full legitimacy to fight all obstacles. We desire to respect the full will of Tunisians. We don’t need sympathy without respect we want to be strong form the inside and rely on the will pf people”

“Regarding several conventions, like flowers, they have a short span and the same goes to these conventions, Bilateral and multilateral Agreements must be revised when the time comes”.

Individual liberties :

In response to the reporter who asked how we can respect the cultural diversity of Tunisians, especially that the Tunisian society is a  mixture of religions and culturesSaïd felt that this kind of “false debates” does not make sense, telling that it can distract us from real socio-economic problems.

“The Tunisian society is one of the most well-known heterogeneous societies, rising such non-existent issues does not make sense. People are free free to choose their culture and faith the state has no say in such matters. But to talk about talking about religions conflict is in exaggeration in my opinion. We live in a state of law and institutions, we want to transcend to a society of laws rather than a state of law. Values in society are shared lets shift from meaningless slogans that lead to nowhere, just like Founding constitutions and international conventions which remained fruitless. laws need to be deep-rooted in people far away from division causes. Stirring up such issues only shifts the focus from economic and social issues ”
