Tunisia-Director General of National Center for Adult Education: “Illiteracy rate in Tunisia is alarming” [Video]

In a statement to Tunisie Numérique, Director General of the National Center for Adult Education Belkacem Al-Rubaie disclosed that Tunisia has an estimated two million illiterate people, constituting approximately 17.8% of the population. This figure is alarming, noting that the Minister of Social Affairs has declared a war on illiteracy, labelling it an enemy of humanity.

He stressed the necessity for clear and well-thought-out mechanisms to fight this high rate of illiteracy, especially in regions such as Kasserine, Kairouan, and Jendouba. These mechanisms comprise coordinating with authorities responsible for population census to identify the number and distribution of illiterate individuals.

He additionally remarked that the situation of contract teachers in adult education has been fixed to enhance their motivation. Further, a strategy with explicit goals has been developed to lower the illiteracy rate. This strategy involves a team of experts collaborating with national and international organizations.

Moreover, our speaker underscored the implementation of another mechanism: leveraging a media system to raise awareness regarding social education centres across various regions of the Republic. He noted a substantial increase in the number of these centres, which are devoted to attracting illiterate people and encouraging them to pursue learning.
