Tunisia-Dismissal of 57 judges by presidential order: Explanation of Sghaier Zakraoui [Audio]

Speaking to Tunisie Numérique, constitutional law professor Sghaier Zakraoui remarked on the presidential decree relating to the amendment of the electoral law. He clarified that the Head of State Kais Saïed reacted favourably to the request of the members of the ISIE as to the elimination of specific loopholes in the law in question.

Our speaker revealed that the dismissal of 57 judges is part of the fight against corruption. “This reminds us of the dismissal of various judges by former Minister of Justice Noureddine Bhiri,” he said, recollecting that they have returned to work.

Zakraoui questioned, in the same context, President Kais Saïed’s adherence to respect for human rights, the presumption of innocence and the rights of defence during the state of exception. “He should have allowed these magistrates to defend themselves,” adds our speaker, clarifying that the number of judges implicated in terrorism cases cannot in any case amount to 57 people.
