Tunisia-El-Hami : We will participate in presidential race with conditions (Audio)

Speaking to Tunisie Numérique, General Coordinator of the Resilience Coalition, Hossam El-Hami reiterated the coalition’s call for a boycott of the local elections, in the first and second rounds. The coalition, composed of diverse figures such as politicians, academics, law professors, heads of parties, and organizations, believes that these elections are part of the grassroots structure that the authorities use to exercise control over the Tunisian people. Our speaker stated that the weak participation in the elections mirrored Tunisians’ indifference, as the authorities failed to provide a clear explanation of their importance.

Concerning the upcoming presidential elections in 2024, the Resilience Coalition sees it as the responsibility of democratic forces to partake and present a unified candidate. This candidate would concentrate on reforming the political and economic systems, given the constitutional changes in 2022 that gave significant power to the President of the Republic for such reforms. The coalition’s candidate is anticipated to work towards improving the political and electoral climate, releasing political detainees, and reviewing certain decrees, including those empowering the President to dismiss judges.

He underscored the significance of re-electing members of the Independent High Electoral Commission to secure full independence, as the head of the executive authority will be one of the presidential candidates. The coalition aims reforms that align with democratic principles and enhance the integrity of the electoral process.
