Tunisia-In 2023, number of asylum seekers and refugees in Tunisia increased by 63%

The research conducted by IACE on the effect of the conflict in Sudan on North Africa shows that the number of Sudanese asylum seekers and refugees in Tunisia attained 4,850 applicants at the end of 2023, compared to 513 at the end of January 2023, marking an increase of 845%. It’s significant that other refugees are not registered and are present on Tunisian territory illegally.

In terms of nationality, Sudanese asylum seekers in Tunisia now outnumber Syrians and Ivorians, occupying the top spot. The significant increase is predicted to have a direct impact on Tunisia, emphasizing the need for coordination between Tunisian authorities and the UNHCR office, the United Nations Refugee Agency in Tunisia, according to a note from IACE.
