Tunisia-Kais Saied: “We are working to guarantee human rights in Tunisia”

President of the Republic Kaïs Saïed affirmed in a discourse delivered remotely to the High-Level Segment of the 49th Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland Monday the efforts to safeguard and guarantee human rights in Tunisia.

He underscored that his concern to secure these rights stems from the firm conviction that they must really exist and not only in the texts.

“These actions emanate from a firm belief that the purpose behind drafting the Constitution and legislation, in general, is to enforce these rights and not to remain at the stage of theory”, he pointed out, adding that he will not hesitate to additionally support the consecutive generations of human rights.

The Head of State added that considering that the July 25 measures did not respect individual rights is “a misleading mistake and an attempt at defamation”. He stressed that the freedoms of the press and of movement are guaranteed, according to the text of the constitution and on the basis of international agreements ratified by Tunisia. “In Tunisia, we seek to establish a rule of law in Tunisia and even more, a society of law,” he said.
