Tunisia – Mahdia: Lawyers in region observe two-day strike

Lawyers in Mahdia led a protest today, Tuesday, in front of the Mahdia Court of First Instance, along with a face-to-face strike, to demand the implementation of the decree setting a Court of Appeal in the region.

The Regional Branch Council of Lawyers, which assembled on April 19, approved a strike for today, Tuesday, and tomorrow, Wednesday, while declaring next Friday, May 3, as a day of protest. Lawyers in the region have been protesting since last February, urging the supervisory authority to enforce the decree issued on February 2, 2018, which established a Court of Appeal.

A certain number of protesters confirmed, in consistent statements to the TAP agency, that waiting for implementation for 6 years, and before that, several years of requests is deemed “a kind of procrastination” to reach to a qualitative change in the justice infrastructure in the region. Remarking  that lawyers in the region are obliged to go to the Monastir Court of Appeal to represent their clients on appeal, which inflicts travel difficulties on them and their clients and disrupts their interests.
