Tunisia – New complaint against Zied Al Heni

Minister of Commerce Kalthoum ben Rejab has filed a new complaint against journalist Ziad Al-Heni, demanding that he be referred under Decree 54 and Chapter 125 of the Penal Code (defamation of a public official).

The new complaint was added to Zied Al-Heni’s file after the public prosecutor launched, on its initiative, to file a complaint against the journalist by the provisions of Decree 54 for the comment he made on IFM radio.

During a solidarity sit-in before the Court of First Instance of Tunisia at the invitation of the Journalists’ Union, Ziad Dabbar, president of the SNJT, characterised the decision of the Minister of Commerce to prosecute Zied Al-Heni and to refer it under Decree 54 as absurd. He called for not altering the judicial system into a tool to send journalists to jail or harass them.

In a statement he made to the press, Dabbar stated that the ease of imprisoning journalists and citizens would undermine the value of freedom, which he called “dangerous.”
