Tunisia-President Kais Saied meets French FM Jean-Yves Le Drian

President Kais Saied welcomed France  Minister of Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Yves Le Drian at Carthage presidential palace.

The two sides addressed the strong and long-standing Tunisian-French relationships and the necessity to strengthen the existing bilateral cooperation between the two countries and expand it in various fields, particularly with regard to combating terrorism and extremism.

The head of the state denounced the terrorist attack in France, calling in the same content to adopt a new approach based principally on approaching the deep-rooted causes of this phenomenon in all parts of the world. He evoked that Tunisia, in turn, suffers from the manifestations of extremism, condemning at the same time those who stand behind who carry out such acts that do not fit in the description of its atrocity .

On the other hand, the Libyan file was addressed as President Saied pointed to the success of Tunisia diplomacy in hosting the intra-Libyan dialogue next November, he stressed the need for Libyan to take matters in their own hand in finding a solution that reflections the will of the Libyan people, adding that more countries interfere the more the situation becomes complex. The head of the state expressed faith in Libyan capability to choose what they want.

The president of the republic also reasserted Tunisia refusal to divide Libya indicating that our country, along with the Libyan people, is one of the countries most impacted by the situation inside the brotherly Libyan country.
The Head of State welcomed France’s support for Tunisia, displaying his satisfaction with the signing of two agreements within the framework of following up on the outcomes of the friendship and work visit he made to Paris last June. The Aghlabid Healthy City project and the high-speed train project, which were discussed with French President Emmanuel Macron, were also approved.

During the meeting, they also discussed the ongoing preparations to host the Francophone Summit in Djerba for 2021

For his part, the French FM, praised the exceptional level of cooperative relationships between the two countries, announcing that his country would send, within the next few days, medical aid worth 500 thousand euros within the framework of bilateral partnership to confront the COVID-19pandemic, in addition to its willingness to finance the construction of a hospital In Gafsa.

He also pointed out to the signing of two agreements, the first relating to the granting of 100 million euros to Tunisia as a first instalment of the government policy support program in the field of economic reformation and the second, with a value of 38 million euros, related to strengthening the supply of water to the Greater Tunis region.

Mr Jean-Yves Le Drian also hailed the success of the cooperation between the two countries in the Security Council represented in the unanimous ratification of Security Council Resolution No. 2532 on combating the “Covid-19” pandemic, requesting for continued coordination between the two sides on the most prominent regional and international issues of common interest, particularly during the period when Tunisia presides over the council in January 2021.
