The President of the Republic, Kaïs Saïed, met on Thursday, August 12, 2021, with members of the National Commission for the Fight against Natural Disasters.
Mr Saïed attended a presentation on the protection system for agricultural and forestry resources and the preventive measures set in place to fight against forest blazes. Fires have recently devastated large areas in Tunisia. The volume of damaged areas has multiplied in comparison with previous years, according to the press release from the Presidency of the Republic.
“You will burn with the same fire that you lit,” the head of the state said, implying that some of the fires were premeditated and even amounted to a crime. In this context, the President of the Republic called for increasing efforts and consolidating human and logistical resources to combat the fires by deploying more equipment and seaplanes in addition to staff training.
“There will be no going back. I made a commitment before God and before the people to move forward. History will never turn back the clock. The threat is no longer imminent. It is manifest. This is what provoked me to activate Article 80 (…) History will take care of those who want to distort reality, “he said.
