Tunisia – Significant progress in rail transport of phosphate

The supervisor of the phosphate transport commercial unit at the Tunisian National Railway Company, Hussein Sassi, revealed that during  2023, the company was capable of transporting 1,693,792 million tonnes of phosphate commercial from the towns of the mining basin to the chemical group’s plants in Skhira and Gabès, against 1,437,349 million tonnes in 2022, an increase of 17.84%, the Tunisian National Railway Company transporting daily, around five phosphate trains.

The same source adds that it would have been likely to transport 3 million tonnes with the same capacities as the current company if there were not certain problems related to the process of transporting phosphate to the production sites of the Société des Phosphates de Gafsa and the process of unloading wagons at the Tunisian-Indian fertilizer factory Tifaret in Skhira.
