Tunisia: The Association of Tunisian Magistrates firmly refuses the dissolution of the Superior Council of the Judiciary

The Executive Office of the Association of Tunisian Magistrates-AMT voiced its strong rejection of all tries to undermine the judiciary and the Superior Council of the Judiciary by the President of the Republic, through mobilization, menaces and incitement to violence against judges, the Council and its members.

It again considered that Kais Saied’s comments reveal his rejection of the foundations of the democratic system, including the constitutional, legal, structural and functional independence of the judiciary, adding that he plans to tear down the country’s constitutional institutions.

According to the AMT, this is “a risky and unprecedented regression in regard to the constitutional achievements and an attempt to subordinate the judicial power to the executive in a system where the President of the Republic incorporates all the powers between his hands”. Correspondingly, he called on all magistrates to take all required militancy measures to safeguard the independence of the judiciary and its institutions as well as the physical integrity of judges in the courts.
