UN calls for ‘credible’ end to Karabakh fighting

The United Nations called on Thursday for a “credible and durable” end to the fighting between Armenia and Azerbaijan in the Nagorgno-Karabakh region following a recent rise in hostilities. The two sides agreed to a ceasefire yesterday after Azerbaijan carried out “local counter-terrorism activities” in the Armenian-majority enclave earlier this week.

Assistant Secretary-General for Central Asia for the Departments of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs and Peace Operations Miroslav Jenca stated that “any renewed escalation would lead to further loss of life and human suffering and further set back internationally supported peace efforts.”
