The number of daily registered COVID-19 cases in the United States hit a record 1,082,549 over the past 24 hours, Johns Hopkins University’s tally showed on Tuesday. The figure is likely a result of many states reporting backlogs after a New Year’s holiday break.
The total number of coronavirus infections in the US since the start of the pandemic now stands at 56,189,547.
Meanwhile, the death toll climbed by 1,688 to reach 827,748.
