Report: US sends some jets, troops to Baltic region

United States Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin ordered the relocation of a certain number of troops and airplanes stationed in Europe to the Baltic countries to increase the presence of its forces at the border between the North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s (NATO) members and Russia, several outlets reported on Tuesday, citing a senior Pentagon official.

Austin reportedly sent in an 800-people infantry battalion from Italy, eight F-35 jets and 20 AH-64 anti-tank helicopters from Germany, and 12 planes of the latter type from Poland. According to the official, the decision is so far temporary. Earlier in the day, Austin met with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba and reaffirmed Washington’s support for the crisis-stricken country.
