RSF files complaint with ICC for war crimes committed against journalists

Reporters Without Borders (RSF) reported that it had lodged a complaint for “war crimes committed against Palestinian journalists in Gaza.

According to RSF, these reporters were victims of attacks amounting to, at the very least, war crimes, justifying an inquiry by the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC).

RSF filed a complaint for war crimes with the ICC prosecutor’s office on October 31, 2023. It details the cases of 9 journalists killed since October 7 and two in the exercise of their duties.

It also mentions the intentional destruction, total or partial, of the premises of more than 50 media outlets in Gaza. 34 reporters have been killed since the beginning of the conflict between Israel and Hamas, including at least 12 who died in the exercise of their activity – 10 in Gaza, one in Israel and one in Lebanon – according to a count by the organization.

“The scale, gravity and recurrence of international crimes targeting reporters in particular in Gaza call for a priority investigation by the ICC prosecutor. We have been calling on him since 2018. The current tragic events show the extreme urgency of his mobilization,” declared Christophe Deloire, Secretary General of RSF.
