Tunisia-[Audio]:Badreddine Gammoudi denounces a health scandal at Sidi Salem dam

Speaking to Tunisie Numérique, head of the Parliamentary Commission for Administrative Reform, Good Governance and the Fight against Corruption, Badreddine Gammoudi, declared that he paid a visit on Friday, March 05, 2021, to Beja after obtaining information on the spill of contaminated water in Sidi Salem dam.

The MP  specified that he conducted an investigation visit to the dam and two water treatment plants, affirming that he remarked that the sanitation water flows into a dam in Béja and then into the waters of the Sidi Salem dam. He added that the water from this dam is one of SONEDE’s principal water source for providing drinking water, remarking that he has discovered that this water is inappropriate for consumption even if it is subjected to treatment.

Mr Gammoudi justified his judgment by the presence of factory waste and even animal corpses. He deemed it a heinous crime against all Tunisians since these waters supply Greater Tunis, Cap Bon, Sahel and the governorate of Sfax.

The deputy emphasised that it is time for each party to assume its responsibilities in this matter whether, at the regional or central level, that is to say, the governor of Beja, the regional directors of Agriculture and Sanitation and the central directorates in Tunis.

He added that he likewise found that the lands adjacent to the dam which are fields of wheat and barley are being irrigated from the waters of this dam which are contaminated.

Badreddine Gammoudi called on the Beja prosecution to act, assuring that he will make contacts with the ministries involved to make them assume their responsibilities in this case
