Following the meeting granted by the President of the Republic Kaïs Saïed, to a delegation of the coordination “I am not a landfill”, which members are against the reopening of the waste landfill of El Guenna in Agareb, various decisions have been made.
The coordination representative declared that they had the chance to reveal to Kais Saïed the reality of the situation, he added that the president was not aware of several things. He added that it was decided to open an inquiry to delimit accountability for what happened as the excessive use of force by the security forces.
Meanwhile, Kaïs Saïed commanded the withdrawal of the security forces, called for a return to calm, and pledged to study the possibility of releasing those arrested during the latest unrest. He requested for three days for the environment minister to return to Tunisia to discuss with her a lasting solution to the environmental problem in Sfax and elsewhere.
Shortly after the meeting, the police withdrew from the El Guenna landfill, which served young people from the region, who forced their way into it and ransacked the machines used for garbage treatment.
They were blocked by the representatives of the local civil society, from burning these devices, for fear of causing a disaster with the gases which are under the ground.
Return, consequently, to square one. And return to blocking the collection of garbage in Sfax.
