Tunisia-Family placement of 366 elderly people at end of February, 82% of whom are women

The Ministry of Families, Women, Children, and the Elderly has revealed a notable growth in the number of elderly individuals profiting from the family placement program for the elderly, with the count reaching 366 by the end of February 2024. Significantly, 82% of these beneficiaries are women. This marks a considerable rise from the 308 people benefiting in 2023 and exceeds the target of 347 elderly individuals set for 2024. Furthermore, funding for this program has seen a substantial increase, going from 840 million dinars to 1,458 million dinars.

To foster the support of elderly people aged over 60, who lack family care, through alternative families, the ministry provides a monthly subsidy. It’s noteworthy that since January 2023, the amount of this monthly aid has been raised from 200 to 350 dinars, reflecting a dedication to enhancing the well-being of the elderly.

This program is critical in reinforcing the mechanisms that ensure elderly care within a natural family setting, thus upholding their dignity, health, safety, psychological, and emotional well-being, and aligning with their best interests.
