Tunisia-Fatma Mseddi: No law to date related to tasks, jurisdiction, and budget of Council of Regions and Districts” [Video]

Speaking to Tunisie Numérique, MP Fatma Mseddi revealed that following the conclusion of the local elections and the announcement of the preliminary results for the Regional and District Councils, the specifics concerning the legislation that would regulate the roles,, jurisdiction and even the funding sources of its members remain unrevealed to Parliament.

She reported that although a budget line was established for the Council of Regions and Districts during the state budget discussions and approval, no funds were assigned for the council’s operational needs.

Furthermore, Mseddi indicated that up to this point, no legislative effort has been made to outline the functioning of the Council of Regions and Districts. The parliament has not obtained any proposals or draft bills, leaving the responsibilities, authorities, and financial aspects, including wages and potential grants, unaddressed.

She proposed that a legislative initiative or suggestion might emerge from the Presidency of the Republic towards the end of February or early March. She stressed the significance of deliberation and discussion on this matter, especially concerning the delineation of the relationship and powers between the two legislative bodies.

She criticized the Election Commission for providing only minimal data to encourage voter participation in the selection of their Regional and District Council representatives. She reasoned that this approach lacks depth and fails to cover formerly mentioned concerns. She underlined the prudence of establishing clear legal frameworks before election commencement to better inform both voters and candidates.
