Tunisia-Hussein Rhaili: “current dam filling rate in Tunisia considered extremely important” [Video]

Speaking to Tunisie Numérique, specialist in development and management of water resources Hussein Rhaili emphasised a considerable improvement in Tunisia’s water resources as of Wednesday, February 28, 2024. For the first time since July 2023, the filling rate of dams in the country has reached around 800 million cubic meters, corresponding to a rate of between 34 and 35 percent. This marks a significant increase compared to September of the previous year, when the filling rate was only about 20 percent.

Ruhaili’s comparison of these figures with the averages of the past three years reveals that, despite this improvement, there is still a shortfall of approximately 180 million cubic meters needed to achieve water security. He remarked the positive impact of recent rains on major crops, agriculture, grazing areas, and herbs, underscoring the importance of these developments for the agricultural sector.

Nevertheless, despite these positive developments, he cautioned that Tunisia continues to encounter challenges related to water scarcity, particularly as the peak season for water consumption approaches, starting in May. He underscored the critical necessity for additional rainfall to further improve the condition of the dams, which would help guarantee a safer and more secure summer in terms of water resources compared to the previous year.
