Tunisia- Khemaies Chammari passes away

Khemaies Chammari, a prominent figure in the Tunisian political landscape, passed away on Monday, January 1, 2024, at the age of 81. Born on November 7, 1942, Chammari made notable contributions to Tunisian politics and human rights. He acted as a deputy from 1994 to 1996, representing the Movement of Socialist Democrats (MDS) in the Chamber of Deputies.

He played a vital role in the defense of human rights in Tunisia, holding positions such as secretary-general and vice-president of the Tunisian League for Human Rights. Throughout his life, Chammari faced periods of arrests for his political beliefs, with arrests occurring in 1966, 1968, 1981, 1987, and 1995.

Internationally, Chammari served as Tunisia’s ambassador to UNESCO from 2011 to 2013. His return to Tunisia was notable as he was elected a member of the Truth and Dignity Commission in 2014. However, he resigned from this position to protest against the controversial appointment of Sihem ben Sedrine as its head.

Khemaies Chammari’s contributions to Tunisia, both domestically and internationally, have left a lasting impact. May he rest in peace.
